Old and New for Booklovers |
|
Meet once a month to discuss contemporary rewriting of the classics. In Session 1, compare Pride and Prejudice to Bridget Jones' Diary. Why does Mr Darcy leap from Jane Austen's pages to win Bridget Jones in Helen Fielding's reworking of Pride and Prejudice? Open discussion about the issues of a reworked novel - do the plots translate to modern events, are the moral issues similar? Which themes transcend time and which have to be "updated"? Non-threatening, enjoyable talking about books!
In the following sessions, compare The Count of Monte Cristo (Alexander Dumas) and The Stars' Tennis Balls (Stephen Fry); Howards End (E.M. Forster) and On Beauty (Zadie Smith); and Robinson Crusoe (Daniel Defoe) and Foe (J.M. Coetzee). |

Short Story Club |
|
| Too little time to read many novels, yet long to join a book club? This is the one for you. Every fortnight we will meet to discuss some of the greatest and lesser known short stories in the English language. The first one will be mailed to you and the others handed out in each class. The emphasis will be on sharing your own responses to the stories and enjoying a glass of wine together, not on literary criticism, although some guiding questions will be provided with each text. |
