What you can do with your photos

You’ll learn all about working with photos on your computer. You’ll discover how your computer stores and organises photos, how you can get photos on to your computer, and where you can find photos on the internet.

You’ll also be introduced to how you can edit photos on your computer to improve them and get them ready for printing or sharing.

To get started, we have a short animation to watch including top tips for getting the best out of your photography.

Using a photo editor

We're going to practise using a typical photo editor. We've created our very own Squirrel Editor interactive practice activities so you can hone your editing skills in a safe environment. If you make a mistake, it doesn't matter, you can always have another go! While Squirrel Editor might look a little different to the app on your device, you should still be able to follow along.

The first activity in this course Photo editor basics – describes the key tasks covered in the practice activities.

As there is a lot of detail to see in photo editing, the practice activities themselves are viewable on laptops, desktops and tablets only. Each activity focuses on specific editing options you encounter when editing photos. They include:

  • Selecting and preparing an image
  • Brightening an image
  • Fixing a blemish
  • Optimising an image size and saving your work.

Managing and storing your photos

You’ll learn all about storing and managing photos on your computer, your mobile devices, and in the cloud.

You’ll find out how to get the most from your Windows or Apple computer’s built-in photo storage, and how this can connect to a cloud account to let you see your photos on all your devices, and even someone else’s computer when you visit them.

Creating a gift from a personal photo

In this course, you’ll follow along with Steve as he turns one of his treasured family photos into a fun jigsaw gift for his sister. He made some minor edits to the photo in the previous course.

Steve won’t have to cut up the original, of course. He’ll be using a website to order a jigsaw printed with the photo on it.

Get ready to see how Steve prepares the photo, uploads it to the site, receives the final product, and is inspired to do more with his photos.
