This Individual Support qualification reflects the role of individuals working in a range of Community Care roles in home or residential care setting, such as Community Care Worker, Aged Care Worker, Disability Care Worker, Residential Care Worker, Home Care Assistant, Disability Service Officer, School Support Officer (Disability), Family Support Worker, Home Respite Worker, Personal Care Assistant or Planned Activity Assistant.


Subsidised (fee-free) places under the Department of Education's Adult Community Education (ACE) and Smart and Skilled Program are available for this qualification. To find out if you are eligible contact HKCC on 9482 1189 or visit

Students that don't meet the Smart and Skilled eligibility are required a Fee-for-Service cost of $3,500 (Paid in instalments of less than $1,500 throughout the course.)

Fees include use of manuals, classroom tutorials, tutor workplace visits, practical assessments, plus notes/handouts. Cost does not include First aid training. Most employers require first aid training.

Student may apply for RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) at $200 per unit of competency.

Classes are held at Hornsby Ku-Ring-Gai Community College, Level 1, 45 Hunter Street, Hornsby. Online attendance via Zoom is an option in some classes.

Work Placement

During this course learners are required to complete 120 hours of clinical placement.

Qualification structure

Total number of units = 15
9 core units plus
6 elective units 

Entry requirements

Learners must provide evidence at an intermediate level of English for this qualification.
A current police check will be required.
If you are planning on working and/or completing your mandatory work placement within an NDIS registered organisation, you may be required to also complete an NDIS worker screening check.

Most workplaces within the health care area require their workers to have an up-to-date Flu and COVID 19 Vaccination and a GP certificate as evidence or added to a current vaccination record card. In most facilities this will also be required for your mandatory work placement. If you are not fully vaccinated or hold an exemption, please talk to HKCC about your options prior to enrolling.

This class will lead to the Specialisation: Ageing

To complete the course with another specialisation, please talk to HKCC to identify different electives. Please note: The specialisation units will commence from 4 June 2024.


  • 120 hours of mandatory work placement are required to successfully complete this course.  
  • Flu and Covid vaccinations are a requirement in most workplaces within the industry. 
  • Police checks are mandatory within the industry. Many workplaces now also require NDIS checks.

Training will be delivered face-to-face from our Hornsby office and also has an online option.
