Sewing for Beginners

In Term 4, choose from two 4-week Beginners classes—enrol in just one, or double the fun with both!

Sewing Course for Beginners - Tote Bag
Learn the essentials of sewing in this fun, hands-on 4-week course designed for complete beginners. You’ll start by gaining confidence with a sewing machine and practicing key sewing techniques. Once you’ve mastered the basics, you’ll put your new skills into practice by creating your very own lined tote bag—complete with a pocket and sturdy straps.

By the end of the course, you’ll have the skills to start simple sewing projects at home, plus a handmade bag to take with you. No prior experience needed! 

To help you get the most out of your classes, here’s a list of what to bring along:

  • A good pair of fabric scissors
  • Pins and a little pincushion
  • Tape measure
  • Seam ripper (very useful when learning!)
  • Fabric marking pen or chalk
  • Hand sewing needles
  • Thread to match your project
  • Machine needles, universal fine assorted (70-90)
  • Machine manual, don't forget the foot pedal
  • Bobbins to fit your sewing machine
  • Some fabric for your bag - or you can use some from the college. More information will be sent closer to the start date.

Learn the essentials of sewing in this fun, hands-on 4-week course designed for complete beginners. You’ll start by gaining confidence with a sewing machine and practicing key sewing techniques. Perfect for beginners—or those who have completed our tote bag course—this 4-week class will get you started with the basics and teach you how to read a simple pattern and work with fabric. 

By the end of the course, you’ll have the skills to start simple sewing projects at home, plus your handmade pyjamas to take home. No prior experience needed! 

To help you get the most out of your classes, here’s a list of what to bring along:

Sewing Machine

Please bring your own sewing machine (in good working order) if you have one. If not, no worries—you can hire one from the college for the course (numbers are limited, so let us know early).

And don’t stress if you can’t find every item on the list—the tutor will have some spare sewing kit supplies you can borrow during class.
